Read messages and find the right conversation

Browse one mailbox or all your mailboxes, open the content you need and combine searches with filters. Results depend on the email that is actually available.

Available since 9 October 2026

The guides describe available tasks. Some options depend on your plan, your workspace’s capabilities and your provider’s permissions.

Open a conversation progressively

The list first shows available headers and previews. Opening a conversation does not immediately download its entire history: select the message card you want to read. Automatically marking it as read waits until its body is available.

Content missing from the cache may need to be fetched from the provider. A mailbox that is paused, disconnected or not enabled for receiving may be unable to retrieve it. The diagnostic distinguishes visible email from unavailable content; no missing content is invented.

  1. Choose the unified inbox or a specific mailbox in the navigation.
  2. Open a conversation then the message you need.
  3. Check its loading status before concluding that it is empty.

Read HTML and images

Aerogram filters HTML and displays it in an isolated document without scripts. Some complex layouts are simplified to keep messages readable. The theme adapts their presentation without translating or rewriting the sender’s text.

Remote images are blocked by default. You can allow them for one message or save that choice for a mailbox. Loading them directly may reveal your IP address and the fact that you opened the message to its sender. Recognised embedded images are handled separately.

View an attachment

Open the preview offered for a supported file, or download it. An attachment name does not mean that all its data is already available locally. Reading it may still require a working mailbox connection.

Download only expected files and check where they came from before opening them. Filtering an email does not guarantee that an attached document is harmless. An external link leads to a separate site, even in a familiar conversation.

Search with the correct scope

Start with a name, a word from the subject or a precise phrase. Filters let you combine read status, stars and attachments. Example: from:alice@example.test has:attachment. These operators keep the same syntax regardless of the guide’s language.

In a selected Gmail mailbox, search can query its remote history. In the unified inbox, IMAP and Microsoft, it uses the local cache and may be incomplete. Spam and Trash are excluded by default; include those folders explicitly when needed.

Move a message out of Spam

Not spam appears below the sender of a message in Spam. The same action is available in its message menu and in the selection toolbar of the Spam view. Each message returns to its original mailbox’s inbox; in a conversation with messages from several folders, only Spam messages are affected. See Organise conversations and follow up for progress, errors and Undo. Moving the message does not change its read or unread status or unblock the sender; image and HTML safeguards remain in place. It makes no promise of training a spam filter. This flow has been available in production since 12 October 2026.

  1. Open Spam in the correct mailbox and find the message, or select the relevant conversations.
  2. Choose Not spam in the reader, its message menu or the Spam selection toolbar.
  3. Check the action card until a result is available; use Undo if it is offered and you want to reverse this action.

Choose a reading layout

Full width reading remains the default. In Settings → Appearance and use → Reading, choose Full width reading or Side by side reading. In a sufficiently wide window, the second mode shows folders, the list and the conversation together. Drag the divider, or focus Adjust the divider with the keyboard and use the left and right arrows. Expand the reader temporarily hides the list; Return to side by side reading shows it again.

On a phone or in a narrow window, the conversation replaces the list without clearing your preference. Returning to the list restores its position. Checking a message does not open it: the selection and the displayed conversation remain separate. Changing the layout or width preserves your draft, loaded content and image permissions. Archiving, deleting or explicitly marking the displayed conversation unread closes that reader without automatically opening another message.

  1. Choose a layout in the Reading settings section.
  2. In side by side reading, adjust the divider by dragging it or using the arrow keys.
  3. Temporarily expand the reader if needed, then return to the list or side by side reading.

Copy the sender and date

In a message’s information panel, a copy icon follows the sender’s address and the date. Copy the sender’s email address copies only the address, without the name or angle brackets. Copy the message date copies exactly the full date shown, in the current language and without an additional time zone conversion.

A confirmation appears only after a successful clipboard write. If copying is unavailable or refused, a discreet message lets you try again without claiming success. Missing information or an invalid date has no copy button. The buttons work with the keyboard and on mobile; they do not collapse the message, start a reply or download additional content.

  1. In an open message, expand its information from the recipient line.
  2. Use the copy button beside From or Date.
  3. Check the confirmation; if copying fails, try again or select the displayed text.

More compact reading and search, staging preview

In the staging preview, reading icons show a narrow sidebar and two areas for full-width reading, three for side-by-side reading. The same visual cues appear in settings and the layout button. In mail navigation, the active section combines a fill and an outline; the other sections keep their outlines.

The list toolbar keeps the mailbox and current folder or tag visible, including in side-by-side reading. Sort and filter uses the same icon on desktop and mobile. The active filter count and the indicator for a changed sort order remain separate; open the menu to review your choices. Pagination stays on the right, and copy buttons follow the address or date directly, even when the text wraps.

Click or tap the empty search field to find saved searches. With the keyboard, focusing the field opens nothing; Arrow Down opens this list. After you type, contact suggestions help you refine your search. Escape or an outside click closes the panel.

  1. Choose a mailbox, then the folder or tag to view; check these cues in the list toolbar.
  2. Open Sort and filter to choose the order and criteria, then check their indicators.
  3. Click or tap the empty search field, or use Arrow Down, to open saved searches.
